Ah, a post-holiday Monday. Always feels like a day to both recharge, restart, and somehow feel exhausted from all the cooking/eating/traveling/shopping/relaxing of the weekend. For me, it’s a day to realize we have just a few short weeks until the other holidays begin, and just a few short days until Chanukah. Sadly for me, Chanukah gets far less attention in this house than Christmas, mainly because, well, we actually leave the house for Christmas, and Chanukah falls during a crazy work time. But not to worry, a Menorah lighting photo will surely be yours this week.
But as I think about gift giving, this one pops into my mind as a total no-brainer for a Monday morning, a perfectly perfect gift. A magazine subscription. So many magazines in this insanely digital age are slashing their subscription prices…making this a great and easy gift. So cheap, sometimes, that you can often get your favorite foodie two monthly reminders of your love and gratitude. For any of the below, get to googling, and you’re likely to find some sick deals.
My favorites these days, and subscriptions I’d love to be surprised with? Saveur, Food and Wine, and Bon Appetit are three of my must haves. I currently subscribe to the Food Network magazine and honestly? I think it rocks. I also love this Italian food magazine, La Cucina, and I’m a sucker for anything foreign and fabulous. For the beer lover, my top 2 right now are Draft and Beer Connoisseur. And you really can’t go wrong with Wine Spectator.
In these days of iPads and Kindles, of constant iPhone RSS reading and seeing the headlines on Twitter, I adore getting a magazine in the mail (or in the airport) and diving in headfirst. Plus, there’s always the bonus of a surprise recipe from one of these magazines being cooked for you with deep and loving gratitude.
Which, for a brain-dead Monday in January, will make it all seem worth it.
